Box CEO Aaron Levie says this is the biggest misconception about AI

Aaron Levie, the CEO of Box, is addressing a prevalent myth surrounding artificial intelligence: the fear that it will lead to mass job loss. In an insightful conversation with Business Insider, Levie emphasized that automation should not be viewed as a threat to employment. Instead, he argues that AI functions as a catalyst for productivity, potentially enabling businesses to grow and create new job opportunities. Levie pointed out that rather than eliminating jobs, AI is more likely to increase overall employment as companies expand their operations. He stated, "If AI is a productivity driver, many companies in the economy will grow faster, leading them to need more employees to support that growth." While some job roles may see fewer hires, the overall workforce is expected to grow. Highlighting sectors such as sales, law, and healthcare, Levie believes that these industries will experience increased demand due to AI advancements. He explained, "As tasks get automated within a job, your output in that job can increase tremendously, which will have varied impacts depending on the company segment or individual role." The conversation also touched on software engineering, a field currently facing scrutiny as AI tools automate coding processes. Despite recent hiring slowdowns in the tech industry, Levie asserted that claims of software engineering disappearing due to AI are misguided. He suggested that AI tools would allow software engineers to produce significantly more code, enhancing their value in the job market. Echoing sentiments from other tech leaders like Okta's CEO Todd McKinnon, Levie noted that as companies innovate more products, the demand for skilled engineers will grow. He stated, "The skill set doesn't become any less important; in fact, it probably becomes more valuable based on where the future is heading." Levie also shared projections about other professions, predicting that paralegals could become five times more productive, allowing them to manage an increased volume of contracts. Similarly, marketing designers and product managers will find their capacities expanded through AI assistance. "AI enables you to achieve greater outputs without eliminating the necessity of those roles," Levie clarified. While Levie is optimistic about the future with AI, he cautions that workforce changes will occur, and individuals must adapt to these shifts. He advised, "Consider what you want to do and how your job might evolve in the future because changes are on the horizon."
