In a groundbreaking announcement at the FediForum online conference, a new project named Bounce was introduced, promising to transform how users interact across decentralized social platforms. Developed by the team behind Bridgy Fed, which connects various open social networks such as Bluesky and Mastodon, Bounce aims to facilitate the migration of followers between different networks that operate on distinct protocols. This innovation marks a significant leap towards establishing a more open social web, providing a real alternative to the dominant ecosystems of major tech companies like Meta, Snap, Google, TikTok, and X. Currently, while users can delete accounts and export data from these platforms, migrating follower connections remains a challenge. At present, Mastodon and Bluesky users can transfer their accounts within their respective networks but face limitations when attempting to move between them. Bounce aims to bridge this gap by enabling users to effectively transfer their Bluesky account to their Mastodon profile. This process involves a bridged account that replicates posts from Mastodon to Bluesky, allowing for seamless follower interactions. However, the technology is complex due to the differing migration systems of the two platforms, requiring Bridgy Fed to act as an intermediary in this process. Although still in proof-of-concept stages, Bounce is set to enter beta testing soon, albeit not for general users yet. Anuj Ahooja, CEO of A New Social, emphasized the importance of demonstrating the feasibility of this migration. Current challenges include the inability to return to Bluesky's Personal Data Server and the lack of visibility for interactions from non-bridged users. Despite these hurdles, the team is focused on enhancing user experience by developing additional features, including notifications for off-bridge interactions. Bounce also provides insights into how many of the user's connections are not bridged, allowing for easier re-following when they transition. Ultimately, the vision for Bounce is to simplify the process of choosing a social platform, enabling users to move their followings with just a few clicks. While Bounce currently supports Bluesky, Mastodon, and Pixelfed, there are plans to expand compatibility to other open social platforms. Ahooja stated that the goal is to empower users to take control of their social networking experience, ensuring that they can easily shift between platforms without losing their connections. Bounce represents the third initiative from A New Social, which also includes Bridgy Fed and a newly launched settings page designed to streamline the bridging process for users. The overarching mission is to return the power of social networks to the users rather than the platform creators, encapsulated in their slogan, 'People not Platforms.' This philosophy is further promoted through merchandise to support their initiatives.
