From defiant to contrite: Formula maker confirms bacteria amid botulism outbreak

ByHeart has confirmed that its internal testing has detected the bacteria responsible for botulism in its infant formula, coinciding with a significant rise in cases of infant botulism. The outbreak, which began on November 8, has seen reported cases surge from 15 to 31 across 15 states as of November 19, with all affected infants requiring hospitalization. Fortunately, no fatalities have been documented so far. Initially, ByHeart was hesitant to accept responsibility, even as the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) identified a troubling trend linking the formula to these illnesses. The CDPH, which manages the exclusive treatment for infant botulism, BabyBIG, began investigating as they noticed a correlation between ByHeart's products and the rising number of cases. Although ByHeart constitutes only 1 percent of the infant formula market, it accounted for a staggering 40 percent of the infant botulism cases reported from August 1 to November 10 among those exposed to dry formula. Preliminary tests conducted by the CDPH confirmed the presence of Clostridium botulinum, the bacterium that causes botulism, in an opened can of ByHeart formula taken from one of the affected infants. However, ByHeart’s co-founder, Mia Funt, remained firm in her stance against the claims. In a video released on the day the outbreak was made public, she asserted that there was no evidence linking their formula to infant botulism, citing multiple regulatory bodies that reportedly found no direct connection. She emphasized that no toxins had been discovered in their product, reflecting a clear divergence in perspectives as the investigation continues.
