Boston Dynamics CEO to step down after more than 30 years with the company. Read the staff memo.

Robert Playter has announced his departure as CEO of Boston Dynamics, concluding a remarkable tenure that spans over 30 years with the company. In a memo addressed to employees, Playter shared that he will officially step down on February 27, after six years in the role. As Playter transitions out, Amanda McMaster, currently the chief financial officer, will take on the responsibilities of interim CEO while the board seeks a permanent successor. Boston Dynamics acknowledged Playter's significant contributions, stating that he has been pivotal in evolving the company from its origins in innovative robotics to becoming a leader in mobile robotic technology. Under Playter's guidance, the firm introduced groundbreaking robots like Spot, a quadruped model, and recently unveiled Atlas, a humanoid robot designed for future factory operations. Hyundai, which holds a majority stake in Boston Dynamics, anticipates that Atlas could be operational in factories by 2028, performing simpler tasks initially. Playter expressed his surprise at nearing commercialization of humanoid robots, a goal he hadn't anticipated reaching so soon. Having joined Boston Dynamics in 1994 after earning a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from MIT, Playter has witnessed the company's evolution through various ownerships, including transitions from Google to SoftBank, and finally to Hyundai Motor Group. As he steps back from his role, he intends to spend quality time with family and friends, with no plans for an advisory position. The robotics community will surely feel the impact of his departure, as he leaves behind a legacy of innovation and progress.
