Bose Corp. has stirred up significant discontent among its customers following the announcement that it will cease cloud support for its SoundTouch speaker series starting February. This decision means that these devices will no longer be able to stream music directly from popular platforms such as Spotify, Pandora, and Amazon Music. Many customers, including long-time users who have invested heavily in Bose products, expressed their frustration, viewing this move as another instance of modern tech's tendency to impose an arbitrary lifespan on gadgets. A spokesperson for Bose explained the rationale behind this controversial choice, stating that the SoundTouch system, launched over a decade ago in 2013, can no longer meet the performance and security standards that users expect. The spokesperson indicated that advancements in technology and the limitations of third-party services contributed to the need to retire the aging cloud infrastructure. While SoundTouch speakers with Bluetooth, auxiliary connections, or HDMI ports will still function for audio playback, the critical cloud support essential for streaming music will be discontinued on February 18. In response to this announcement, customers took to social media, including Bose's Reddit forum, to voice their discontent. Richard Lomas, a user who highlighted the impact on his elderly relatives, shared that they rely heavily on the simplicity of the SoundTouch interface to enjoy their favorite music. Concerned about their inability to adapt to alternative methods like Bluetooth or aux inputs, he expressed deep disappointment with Bose's decision. Lomas, who owns over $1,000 worth of Bose products, stated that he would not consider purchasing from the company again if this decision stands. As a gesture of goodwill, Bose is offering affected customers a 25% discount on future purchases. Additionally, the company is reportedly exploring trade-in and upgrade options to assist users in transitioning to newer technology. Despite this, many customers remain skeptical, with some noting that competitors like Sonos have managed to maintain cloud support for their older devices, allowing continued access to streaming services. Bose's recent decision to cut cloud functionality entirely for the SoundTouch line has raised questions about the longevity of connected devices and the responsibilities of manufacturers to their customers. As the situation unfolds, Bose is likely to face ongoing scrutiny from its user base.
