In a festive gesture aimed at developers, OpenAI and Anthropic have announced temporary increases to the usage limits of their AI coding tools. This initiative is designed to provide extra capacity during the bustling holiday season, allowing developers to maximize their productivity. Both companies are rolling out higher usage caps for select users, specifically targeting those who frequently hit existing limits during intense work periods. OpenAI has implemented a significant change by resetting and doubling the usual rate limits for users of Codex, its advanced AI-driven coding assistant. These enhanced limits are set to remain active until January 1, 2026. Thibault Sottiaux, a member of the Technical Staff at OpenAI, shared the news on X, describing this increase as a holiday thank-you to users who have provided valuable feedback following months of usage. Codex, known for its ability to facilitate end-to-end software development, can generate and modify code based on text prompts or images. It is accessible across various platforms, including the command line, ChatGPT, and development environments such as Visual Studio Code and Cursor. Meanwhile, Anthropic is also running a similar promotion for its Claude AI platform. From December 25 to December 31, subscribers on Pro and Max plans will receive double their usual usage limits across mobile, desktop, and web versions of the service. However, it's important to note that this offer is exclusive to individual subscribers, with Team and Enterprise plans being excluded. Both existing and new subscribers who sign up during this promotional period can take advantage of the increased limits. Once the promotion concludes, all accounts will revert to their standard usage allowances according to their subscription tiers. This holiday boost comes at a time when AI providers are closely monitoring usage caps and rate limits across various paid plans. By easing these restrictions temporarily, OpenAI and Anthropic are clearly focusing on developers and power users who depend on AI tools for their demanding workloads, especially during peak usage times.
