
In a promising development for the Indian voice AI landscape, Bolna has successfully raised $6.3 million in a seed funding round led by General Catalyst. This funding signifies the growing recognition of voice orchestration solutions in the country, where voice communication is a widely accepted mode of interaction among businesses and consumers alike. Founded by Maitreya Wagh and Prateek Sachan, Bolna has faced its share of skepticism, notably from Y Combinator, which initially rejected their application five times. The founders were challenged to demonstrate that Indian enterprises would invest in their innovative voice solutions. "When we were applying for Y Combinator, we received feedback indicating that while our product was capable of creating realistic voice agents, the belief was that Indian businesses would be reluctant to pay for such technology," Wagh shared with TechCrunch. Despite the initial hurdles, Bolna persisted and returned to Y Combinator with a compelling case: monthly revenues exceeding $25,000, generated through $100 pilot programs aimed at helping clients develop their own voice agents. The startup has since increased the pricing of these pilots to $500, reflecting its growing traction in the market. Bolna's orchestration platform is designed to integrate and manage various AI voice technologies, catering to the unique interaction styles prevalent in India. This includes features like effective noise cancellation, caller ID verification through Truecaller, and support for multiple languages. Users can create voice agents simply by describing their needs, eliminating the necessity for technical expertise. Currently, a significant portion of Bolna's revenue—around 75%—comes from self-service customers. The flexibility of their platform allows enterprises to switch between different AI models as needed, ensuring optimal performance regardless of changing technological landscapes. Wagh emphasized the importance of this adaptability, stating, "Our platform enables customers to easily switch models or utilize different ones for various locales to maximize efficiency." Bolna's clientele spans a variety of industries, including car resale, on-demand household services, and beverages, primarily focusing on small to medium-sized businesses. The startup is also targeting larger enterprises, having already signed two significant customers and piloting with four more. To support this enterprise expansion, Bolna is steadily increasing its team of forward-deployed engineers, who work closely with clients to tailor implementations to their specific needs. With over 200,000 calls handled daily, Bolna is on track to achieve an annual recurring revenue of nearly $700,000. While English and Hindi dominate the call volume, there is a notable uptick in the use of regional languages, reflecting the diverse linguistic landscape of India. Akarsh Shrivastava from General Catalyst praised Bolna's adaptable orchestration layer, highlighting its potential to meet the varied requirements of different customers, thus making it a versatile choice for businesses looking to integrate voice AI solutions effectively.
