MALAGA, Spain—BMW has officially announced the arrival of its first all-electric 3 Series, the 2027 i3, set to begin production in Munich this August. This new model follows the recent introduction of the iX3, which has been praised for its impressive performance and efficient electric powertrain, making it a strong contender in the premium SUV electric vehicle market. The i3 has evolved from the initial Neue Klasse sedan concept, maintaining much of its original design while adapting to the realities of production. Notably, the traditional kidney grille has been reimagined, featuring a design that includes 'kidneys within kidneys' and replaces chrome with a more modern aesthetic. While the hood design maintains a sleek valley similar to the iX3, the kidney shape is elongated, distinguishing it from the more aggressive styling seen in BMW’s SUV lineup. At the rear, however, the changes are more pronounced. Practicality necessitated a raised rear deck to enhance cargo space, which somewhat detracts from the elegance of the concept model. The i3 still retains the iconic “Hofmeister kink” in the rear window, a nod to BMW’s design heritage. Initially, the i3 will launch as a sedan, but BMW has hinted at the possibility of a Touring variant—a wagon style—that enthusiasts hope will make its way to international markets. Inside, the cabin resembles that of the iX3 but offers slightly less headroom. It features physical buttons on the center console alongside a trapezoidal touchscreen infotainment system, though the new multifunction steering wheel has received mixed reviews for its design. The vehicle boasts a spacious rear seat, benefiting from the design efficiencies typical of electric vehicles, although rear passengers may sit at a higher elevation than those in the front. Additionally, the i3 is equipped with advanced technology, including a Panoramic Vision display and an onboard AI assistant powered by Alexa, enhancing the driving experience with voice recognition capabilities.
