BMW says station wagons are no joke, so this one’s going to the Nürburgring

In a surprising twist, the station wagon has evolved from a family-friendly vehicle into a niche performance machine, particularly in the U.S. market that once celebrated this design. Today, wagons are categorized into two distinct types: the rugged, slightly elevated versions designed for adventurous terrains and the high-performance models that boast over 600 horsepower, catering to speed enthusiasts and their families. While U.S. consumers will soon see the M5 Touring—a plug-in hybrid wagon delivering an impressive 717 hp—BMW has opted not to introduce the lighter and more agile M3 Touring to this market, despite persistent demand. However, excitement is brewing as BMW prepares to debut a racing variant of the M3 Touring in the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS), an event that takes place at the iconic Nürburgring racetrack nestled in the Eifel Mountains. Originally conceived as an April Fool’s joke last year, the idea gained traction among fans, prompting BMW to allocate resources to develop a station wagon version of its GT3 race car, the M4 GT3 EVO. This thrilling entry will make its first appearance in the NLS next week, with its major highlight being the prestigious Nürburgring 24H race scheduled for mid-May. Notably, F1 star Max Verstappen is set to participate in this event, making for an exciting weekend. The decision to race in the NLS is strategic, given that the M3 Touring 24H closely mirrors the technical specifications of the GT3 model, albeit with slight modifications. Due to GT3 regulations, which mandate that eligible vehicles must start as two-door coupes, a four-door sedan or five-door wagon like the M3 Touring is ineligible for prestigious events such as Le Mans or Daytona. This unique venture showcases BMW's commitment to innovation within the station wagon segment, merging practicality with performance.
