BMW’s first electric M car is coming in 2027—with one motor per wheel

In a thrilling development for car enthusiasts, BMW is gearing up to launch its inaugural electric M vehicle in 2027. This exciting entry will be powered by a sophisticated platform referred to as the "Neue Klasse," which aims to reshape the future of electric mobility within the brand. Following the introduction of the iX3 last year, which marked the beginning of BMW's electric lineup, the company plans to reveal the fully electric 3 Series, known as the i3 sedan, later this year. However, the spotlight will truly shine on the M division next year, as it prepares to unveil what many anticipate could be dubbed the iM3, a performance-oriented EV that promises to elevate the standards of electric sports cars. Franciscus van Meel, managing director of BMW M GmbH, emphasized the significance of this launch, stating, "The next generation of models are set to establish a new benchmark in the high-performance vehicle segment." He added that the latest Neue Klasse technology will enhance the driving experience, delivering racetrack-ready dynamics for everyday driving. A key differentiator for this electric M model will be its advanced technology. The Neue Klasse platform embraces the trend of software-defined vehicles, utilizing a handful of powerful computers that manage various functions instead of relying on numerous individual electronic control units. One computer will manage infotainment, while another will oversee automated driving and safety systems. Notably, a dedicated system known as the Heart of Joy will facilitate M-specific software, enhancing the vehicle's electronic dynamic control at a remarkable speed. This innovation will effectively manage the four electric motors that will power the new electric M, ensuring an exhilarating driving experience unlike any other.
