In a bold move, BMW i Ventures has announced the launch of a substantial $300 million fund, aiming to revolutionize the automotive landscape through artificial intelligence. The independent investment branch of BMW AG is positioning itself to leverage AI's potential to redefine industry operations. This newly established fund, revealed on Wednesday, will target early-stage to Series B startups across North America and Europe. The focus will be on innovations in agentic AI and physical AI, which encompasses applications in robotics and autonomous vehicles, alongside advancements in industrial software, materials, and supply chain technologies. With this third fund, BMW i Ventures now manages a total of $1.1 billion in capital. A crucial aspect of this initiative is the pursuit of AI startups that transcend fleeting tech trends. Marcus Behrendt, managing partner at BMW i Ventures, emphasized the importance of identifying genuine opportunities that will shape the future. "We always try to adjust and shift our focus towards what are the new trends, not just for the trend’s sake, but for what will actually determine the future," Behrendt remarked in a recent interview. The firm’s investment history reflects this strategic outlook. Since launching its first fund in 2016, which concentrated on autonomous vehicles and digital technologies, the company has continually adapted its focus. The second fund, initiated in 2021, prioritized sustainability and supply chain innovations. Behrendt and managing partner Kaspar Sage believe AI is not just the latest trend; it will serve as a cornerstone for future technological advancements in areas including robotics and software development. Sage, operating from the firm’s Silicon Valley office, pointed out that the most promising opportunities often lie in seemingly ordinary innovations that yield significant impacts. He highlighted Synera, a German startup backed by BMW i Ventures, which employs AI agents to enhance design and engineering processes. Originally an integration software provider, Synera transitioned to incorporate AI, enabling dramatic reductions in project timelines and efficiency gains. As BMW i Ventures embarks on this exciting new chapter, it reaffirms its commitment to previously explored sectors, such as advanced materials and circular supply chains. The focus on AI will complement these efforts rather than replace them. Although no investments have been finalized from this latest fund yet, the second fund is nearing completion and has already backed over 35 ventures, including five recent AI-focused startups that are still under wraps.
