Bluesky CEO Jay Graber steps down

In a significant leadership shift, Bluesky CEO Jay Graber is stepping down from her position, transitioning to the role of chief innovation officer, as announced by the company on Monday. Graber has played a pivotal role in propelling Bluesky, a competitor to X and Threads, to an impressive 43 million users while advancing its foundational AT Protocol. Toni Schneider, former CEO of Automattic and a partner at True Ventures, will assume the role of interim CEO. Both Automattic and True Ventures are investors in Bluesky. In her blog post detailing the change, Graber emphasized that Bluesky, now a more mature organization, requires a “seasoned operator focused on scaling and execution.” She expressed her enthusiasm for concentrating on the company's technological advancements, stating, “I’m most energized by exploring new ideas, bringing a vision to life, and helping people discover their strengths.” As the search for a permanent chief executive begins, Schneider’s extensive background with Automattic—known for commercializing WordPress’s open-source technology—equips him with insights into balancing open-source innovation with profitability. Under Graber’s leadership, Bluesky experienced notable growth, particularly following Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, which prompted significant changes within the platform. However, the company has encountered challenges related to content moderation as it expanded. Users have had differing expectations regarding the company's moderation approach, which emphasizes user-controlled tools. Bluesky is now also tasked with navigating an increasing number of age assurance regulations across various states. Recent legislation in Mississippi has resulted in the company blocking access from the state, while laws in Ohio, South Dakota, and Wyoming have necessitated age verification processes. As Schneider steps into this interim role, he remains committed to his responsibilities at True Ventures. Highlighting Bluesky’s growth trajectory, he pointed out its expansion to over 40 million users and a thriving ecosystem of more than 500 active applications. Schneider noted that the company’s next phase will focus on fostering opportunities for third-party developers. In his blog entry, Schneider remarked, “Bluesky has cracked a case that stumped the industry for years: How to create a social network that combines personal freedom and ownership with the immediacy and ease of use that users expect from modern social services.”
