Bluesky’s interim CEO, Toni Schneider, drops the ‘interim’

Bluesky has officially appointed Toni Schneider as its permanent CEO, after he served in the interim role for the past four months. Schneider, who previously founded Automattic, the parent company of WordPress and Tumblr, took over from Jay Graber, who transitioned to the chief innovation officer position earlier this year. In a recent blog post, Schneider expressed his enthusiasm for the role, stating, "I’m loving the mission and the job, and I’m all in as Bluesky’s official CEO." He emphasized the need for change, outlining plans to foster smaller, more private communities, which he believes will drive the next phase of growth and innovation for the platform. Bluesky emerged as an alternative to Twitter, particularly appealing to users seeking a different experience following Elon Musk's acquisition of the platform in 2022. Initially gaining traction under Graber’s leadership, Bluesky amassed 43 million users and expanded its underlying technology, the AT Protocol, which facilitates connectivity among various applications. However, recent reports suggest that Bluesky is facing difficulties in maintaining its user base, with concerns raised about declining engagement and an apparent stagnation in community growth. Despite a surge in users following Donald Trump’s re-election, the platform seems to have experienced a downturn since that period. As Schneider steps into his new role, he faces the challenge of revitalizing the platform. He is optimistic about the future, declaring, "We’re at the very beginning of this story," indicating his commitment to steering Bluesky through its current obstacles.
