Bluesky leans into AI with Attie, an app for building custom feeds

Bluesky has just launched an innovative application that shifts its focus from social networking to artificial intelligence. Named Attie, this AI assistant empowers users to construct their own algorithms and curate personalized feeds. The app was introduced by Jay Graber, Bluesky’s former CEO and now Chief Innovation Officer, along with CTO Paul Frazee at the recent Atmosphere conference. Attendees at the conference will be the first to experience this beta version of Attie, which utilizes Anthropic’s Claude technology to create a dynamic social application based on Bluesky's AT Protocol. Interim CEO Toni Schneider emphasized that this new product is distinct from the main Bluesky application, marking it as the first development from Graber's new team. With Attie, users can easily build customized feeds by simply typing commands in natural language, similar to interacting with a standard AI chatbot. To get started, users will log in using their Atmosphere credentials, which are compatible with any application utilizing the atproto infrastructure, including Bluesky. This integration allows Attie to quickly grasp user preferences and interests, as it operates within an open system that shares data across various applications. “You control it, you shape it, without having to write code or know how to set up these feeds,” Schneider remarked. He described the launch as a pivotal moment for expanding user creativity within the Atmosphere ecosystem. Additionally, Schneider highlighted that while Attie is an AI product, its primary focus is on enhancing user experience and utility. Currently, Attie allows users to build and view tailored feeds, which will soon be accessible within Bluesky and other atproto applications. Looking ahead, the developers plan to enable users to create their own social apps and tools for others. Graber’s return to a hands-on role in development reflects her desire to focus on building rather than managing, a shift that Schneider believes will allow her to thrive as a leader and innovator. In light of concerns surrounding AI usage by major platforms that often prioritize their interests over user needs, Graber stated, “We think AI should serve people, not platforms.” She emphasized the importance of an open protocol that empowers users to construct their own feeds and create software tailored to their preferences. Bluesky recently secured an additional $100 million in funding, which Schneider noted provides the company with over three years of financial stability. This support signals to the broader community that Bluesky is positioned for longevity and growth. The team is also tackling significant challenges, including enhancing privacy controls and exploring monetization strategies for their 43.4 million-user social network. Despite speculation, Schneider confirmed that there are no plans for crypto integration, addressing user concerns about potential scams or payment functionalities within the app. Instead, the focus may shift towards subscription models and hosting services for community management on the protocol. Schneider likens the Atmosphere to WordPress, suggesting that an open system could foster a thriving ecosystem of diverse applications and services.
