Bluesky blocks service in Mississippi over age assurance law

In a bold move, social networking startup Bluesky has chosen to suspend its services in Mississippi in response to a newly enacted age verification law. The company announced this decision in a blog post on Friday, outlining the challenges posed by the law and stating that, as a small team, they lack the necessary resources to implement the required technical modifications. The legislation, known as Mississippi's HB 1125, mandates that all users must undergo age verification prior to accessing social media platforms like Bluesky. This requirement raises significant concerns for Bluesky, particularly regarding privacy risks and the law's expansive reach. On Thursday, the U.S. Supreme Court declined an emergency appeal that sought to halt the law's implementation while ongoing legal disputes are considered, leaving Bluesky with a difficult compliance choice. Under this law, Bluesky would need to verify the age of every user and obtain parental consent for individuals under 18. This is a stark contrast to other age verification frameworks, such as the U.K.'s Online Safety Act, which only necessitates checks for specific content. The implications of Mississippi's law are far-reaching, as it could impose penalties of up to $10,000 for each non-compliant user. Bluesky argues that the law transcends its stated goal of child safety, creating considerable obstacles that restrict free speech and disproportionately impact smaller platforms and innovative technologies. Compliance would obligate Bluesky to gather and maintain sensitive personal information from all users, alongside intensive oversight of minors. In their blog post, the company emphasized their limitations compared to larger tech companies, stating, "Unlike tech giants with vast resources, we’re a small team focused on building decentralized social technology that puts users in control." They highlighted that the infrastructure required for age verification systems demands significant investment in development and privacy protections, which could be overwhelming for smaller providers. This situation risks cementing the dominance of existing major tech platforms while hindering competition and innovation that ultimately benefits users. It's important to note that this decision pertains solely to the Bluesky app developed on the AT Protocol, and other applications may respond differently to the new legal landscape.
