Bluesky, the decentralized social networking platform, is set to introduce age verification measures for its users in Ohio starting September 29. This initiative is in response to new state regulations aimed at safeguarding minors against online dangers. The platform will utilize the Kids Web Services (KWS) age verification system, which it already employs in South Dakota and Wyoming, to meet similar legal obligations. Bluesky made the announcement through its official Safety account and updated its blog to reflect this significant change. As various states in the U.S. enact their own age verification laws due to the absence of federal guidelines, the Ohio legislation seeks to curb children's access to adult content, including materials available on social media. Under the new law, users in Ohio will need to provide a government-issued photo ID or another form of identification to access adult content. KWS will facilitate the age verification process by offering diverse methods beyond just ID uploads, such as facial recognition and payment card verification. This approach aims to make the process more user-friendly. However, the inconsistent nature of age verification laws across the U.S. poses challenges for Bluesky. For instance, a recent law in Mississippi, characterized by vague and overly broad language, forced Bluesky to suspend its services in the state due to the substantial technical adjustments required for compliance. This situation has allowed larger competitors like Meta to maintain an edge in the social networking landscape. The introduction of age verification could present hurdles for smaller platforms like Bluesky, potentially deterring new users and diverting focus from innovative developments such as new features and technology enhancements. This regulatory move comes on the heels of user concerns regarding recent updates to Bluesky's moderation policies and guidelines, as the company has pledged to impose stricter penalties for violations related to harassment and toxic behavior.
