It’s not just you — Bluesky is (sorta) down

On Thursday, Bluesky's website and app encountered significant service issues, which COO Rose Wang attributed to a denial-of-service attack. The disruptions reportedly began at approximately 2:42 a.m. ET and have persisted throughout the day. Users have reported that while the Bluesky app and website may load intermittently, many attempts result in frustrating error messages. For example, when navigating to certain feeds, users are met with notifications indicating that the feed is overloaded due to high traffic. One such message reads, "This feed is currently receiving high traffic and is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later. Message from server: Rate Limit Exceeded." Popular sections like Discover and the official Bluesky Team feed are particularly affected, though individual user feeds may still be accessible at times. Additionally, attempts to view user profiles often lead to error prompts, necessitating multiple refreshes. At around 3:46 a.m. ET, Bluesky protocol engineer Bryan Newbold acknowledged the troubles, stating, "oof, our services are getting pretty hard tonight." Despite the ongoing issues, the company has yet to provide a clear explanation for the slowdown or an estimated timeline for resolution. As of now, Bluesky has not responded to inquiries for comment. Interestingly, other platforms utilizing the same decentralized protocol appear to be operating without similar disruptions.
