Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket just exploded during a static fire test

In a dramatic turn of events, Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket was destroyed during a static fire test at its Florida launch facility on Thursday evening. Following engine ignition, the rocket experienced a catastrophic failure, resulting in a massive explosion that was captured live by NASASpaceflight.com. The incident occurred at launch complex LC-36A, where the first stage of the New Glenn, powered by seven BE-4 engines and fueled with methane, erupted in a towering fireball. This explosion marks one of the most significant rocket failures since the Soviet Union's N1 rocket was destroyed in 1969. While the exact cause of the failure remains unknown, preliminary reports suggest that the issue originated within the engine section of the rocket. Blue Origin's founder, Jeff Bezos, addressed the situation on social media, stating, "It’s too early to know the root cause but we’re already working to find it. Very rough day, but we’ll rebuild whatever needs rebuilding and get back to flying. It’s worth it." Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the explosion. However, the incident has reportedly caused extensive damage to the complex launch site. This event stands as the worst disaster for Blue Origin since its inception in 2000, drawing comparisons to past setbacks experienced by other aerospace companies, such as SpaceX's lengthy recovery from a pad failure in 2016.
