Blue Origin has announced a significant pause in its New Shepard suborbital space tourism program, hinting at a possible permanent conclusion to this initiative. The New Shepard rocket and capsule, operational since April 2015, have successfully completed 38 launches, with only one failure recorded. Throughout its run, the program has transported 98 individuals briefly into space and delivered over 200 scientific payloads to a microgravity environment. The decision to pause operations was communicated by CEO Dave Limp in an internal email, stating that the company will redirect its focus and resources toward enhancing lunar capabilities, particularly with the New Glenn rocket. Limp emphasized the 'extraordinary opportunity' to contribute to the nation's goal of returning humans to the Moon and establishing a lasting presence there. This announcement came as a surprise to many employees, especially following the recent successful mission that took place just eight days prior, which saw six people reach space. Despite ongoing developments, including four new boosters and two capsules currently under construction, the future of the New Shepard program has been under scrutiny. Even though Blue Origin has been marketing human flights at approximately $1 million per ticket, questions about the program's financial sustainability linger. Reports indicate that while the initiative has moved closer to breaking even, it continues to be a burden on Blue Origin's broader goals. With about 400 employees dedicated to New Shepard, the program is viewed as a distraction from the company's long-term vision of creating space settlements for millions to live and work beyond Earth.
