Blue Origin pauses space tourism flights to focus on the moon

Blue Origin, the aerospace venture founded by Jeff Bezos, has announced a significant shift in its operational focus. The company will suspend its space tourism flights for a minimum of two years to dedicate its resources towards upcoming lunar missions. This decision marks a temporary end to a program that has successfully flown individuals beyond the Kármán line, the officially recognized boundary of space, for the past five years. The announcement comes just weeks ahead of the anticipated third launch of the New Glenn mega-rocket, scheduled for late February. Originally, Blue Origin had planned to use this launch to deploy its robotic lunar lander. However, the spacecraft is still undergoing testing at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Texas. Since taking office, President Donald Trump has emphasized the urgency of returning astronauts to the moon before the end of his administration, creating opportunities for companies beyond SpaceX to engage in lunar exploration. Blue Origin expressed that this strategic decision underscores its commitment to supporting the national objective of establishing a permanent presence on the Moon. Having first launched the New Shepard rocket over a decade ago, Blue Origin made history by successfully returning the rocket to Earth after its journey to space. Unlike SpaceX’s Falcon 9, the New Shepard rocket was designed solely for suborbital flights, primarily catering to space tourism and scientific missions. To date, the New Shepard program has conducted 38 flights, transporting 98 individuals into space and carrying over 200 scientific payloads. The New Shepard program faced a hiatus in 2022 when a booster exploded mid-flight. Fortunately, there were no passengers onboard during that incident, and the capsule successfully detached from the booster. However, it remained grounded until late 2023 as Blue Origin worked diligently to resolve the technical issues that arose.
