Blue Origin reportedly raising $10B at $130B valuation

Blue Origin, the space venture founded by billionaire Jeff Bezos, is in the process of securing $10 billion in funding, aiming for a staggering pre-money valuation of $130 billion. This financing round is backed by Coatue Asset Management, Bezos himself, and various other prominent investors, as reported by The New York Times. Coatue is anticipated to contribute approximately $4 billion to this round, marking Blue Origin's inaugural external fundraising effort. Bezos is also set to invest $2 billion, with the remaining funds coming from other investors involved in this significant capital raise. This funding initiative comes on the heels of a notable setback for Blue Origin, following the explosion of its flagship rocket, New Glenn, during a test in late May. Despite the incident, which remains under investigation, the company is determined to utilize New Glenn for upcoming launches later this year. A critical aspect of Blue Origin's strategy involves rebuilding its launchpad in Cape Canaveral, the sole facility capable of supporting New Glenn, which is regarded as one of the most powerful launch vehicles currently available. The operational readiness of New Glenn is a crucial objective for the company, particularly as it pivots its focus towards supporting NASA’s Artemis missions aimed at lunar exploration. Additionally, Blue Origin has ambitions to establish and manage data centers in space, tapping into a growing trend of relocating substantial computing resources into orbit. Some of the fresh capital may also facilitate the development of its satellite internet network, unveiled earlier this year, which plans to deploy thousands of satellites to enhance data connectivity for enterprise, government, and data center customers. This funding announcement follows a remarkable IPO by SpaceX last month, where the company raised over $85 billion, achieving a valuation of $1.75 trillion, underscoring the competitive landscape in the space industry.
