Blue Origin scrubs second launch of New Glenn due to weather, cruise ship traffic

Blue Origin, the aerospace venture founded by Jeff Bezos, has once again postponed the launch of its New Glenn mega-rocket, which was scheduled for Sunday afternoon. The decision to scrub the launch was attributed to adverse weather conditions, minor issues with the launch pad equipment, and the presence of a cruise ship that encroached upon the designated flight path. The timeline for a potential rescheduling remains uncertain as the company assesses future opportunities based on weather forecasts. Recently, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) implemented restrictions on space launches, complicating Blue Origin's launch plans amid ongoing government shutdowns. On November 7, Blue Origin assured followers on social media that they were collaborating with the FAA to facilitate the launch. This mission is particularly significant for Blue Origin as it aims to demonstrate the full reusability of the New Glenn rocket. While the rocket successfully achieved orbit during its inaugural flight in January, the booster unfortunately exploded prior to landing on a drone ship in the ocean. The upcoming attempt marks the first commercial mission for New Glenn, which will transport NASA's ESCAPADE spacecraft to Mars and carry a technology demonstrator for Viasat as part of another NASA initiative. Establishing New Glenn's ability to safely and cost-effectively deliver payloads is essential for Blue Origin to remain competitive with industry leader SpaceX. Originally slated for launch earlier this year, the mission has faced multiple delays. On Sunday, the launch window opened at 2:45 p.m. local time in Cape Canaveral, Florida, providing a window of approximately 90 minutes. However, weather concerns and technical setbacks led to several delays, and just minutes before the launch, the appearance of a cruise ship in the flight path forced the team to cancel the attempt, despite expectations that it would clear before the closure of the launch window at 4:15 p.m.
