Blue Origin's highly anticipated second flight of the New Glenn rocket has been postponed, with CEO Dave Limp announcing on Monday that it will now take place no earlier than mid-August. This new timeline marks a shift from the company's earlier goal of a late spring launch, which was initially set back in March. The first launch of New Glenn occurred on January 16, where the rocket's upper stage successfully reached orbit. However, the mission was marred by the booster stage's explosion during its landing attempt on a drone ship in the ocean. Following this incident, Blue Origin revealed in March that it had identified seven corrective actions as part of a comprehensive investigation mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration. In his update, Limp confirmed that the company is committed to landing and recovering the booster stage in the upcoming second flight. The targeted launch date is now set for August 15 or later. Originally unveiled in 2016, the New Glenn rocket program has faced numerous delays, with initial aspirations for a 2021 launch. As Blue Origin grapples with its setbacks, competitor SpaceX has solidified its position as a leader in the launch market, actively developing its own mega-rocket, Starship.
