Blue Origin scrubs second New Glenn launch, will try again November 12

Blue Origin, the aerospace venture led by Jeff Bezos, has postponed the second launch of its New Glenn rocket, initially scheduled for Sunday afternoon. The decision was made due to adverse weather conditions, minor issues with launch pad equipment, and the presence of a cruise ship that wandered too close to the designated flight path. In a statement released late Sunday, the company announced that it will make a new attempt to launch New Glenn on Wednesday, November 12. This comes after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed restrictions on space launches due to a government shutdown. Blue Origin confirmed that it has collaborated with the FAA to facilitate this upcoming launch. The launch window is set to open at 2:50 p.m. ET and will be in effect until 4:17 p.m. ET. This mission holds significant importance for Blue Origin for multiple reasons. Firstly, it is crucial for the company to demonstrate the full reusability of its rocket. Although New Glenn achieved orbit during its inaugural launch in January, the booster exploded prior to landing on a drone ship in the ocean. The company aims to successfully land the booster for the first time during this second flight. Moreover, this mission marks New Glenn's first commercial endeavor. The rocket is slated to transport NASA’s ESCAPADE spacecraft towards Mars, alongside a tech demonstrator for Viasat, which is part of another NASA initiative. Successfully delivering payloads to space in a safe and cost-effective manner, largely due to the rocket's reusability, is vital for Blue Origin as it seeks to compete with SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk. Originally, the second launch was supposed to take place earlier this year, but it was postponed multiple times. The launch window at Cape Canaveral, Florida, initially opened at 2:45 p.m. ET, with an approximate 90-minute duration. However, concerns regarding weather and launch pad equipment led to several delays. Just moments before the launch was to occur, a cruise ship entered the flight path, prompting the decision to scrub the attempt, despite expectations that the ship would clear the area before the window closed at 4:15 p.m. ET.
