Blue Origin plans to launch New Glenn again this year after explosion

Blue Origin is setting its sights on a 2026 relaunch of the New Glenn rocket, despite a significant explosion that occurred last week during testing at its Cape Canaveral facility. CEO Dave Limp shared optimistic news on Monday, revealing that the launchpad's infrastructure had sustained less damage than initially feared. Limp noted that not only was the launchpad in better condition, but also a previously used New Glenn rocket booster and three upper stages were still intact and in good shape. He confidently stated, "We will fly again before the end of this year," marking a bold move to return to flight operations shortly after one of the most notable failures in the company's history. Industry experts had anticipated a longer timeline for New Glenn's next flight, with many suggesting the company would be grounded until at least 2027 due to the explosion's apparent impact on the launchpad—Blue Origin's sole facility capable of supporting New Glenn launches. As of now, the cause of the explosion remains unconfirmed. Unlike SpaceX, which managed to bounce back swiftly after a Falcon 9 rocket explosion in 2016—thanks to having a second launchpad nearly ready—Blue Origin is still in the early stages of constructing a second launchpad at Cape Canaveral. This presents a unique challenge for the company. The New Glenn rocket is crucial for NASA's upcoming Artemis missions to the moon, and Blue Origin has shifted its focus entirely to supporting these endeavors. Earlier this year, the company announced a suspension of its space tourism activities on the smaller New Shepard rocket for a minimum of two years. The inaugural launch of New Glenn took place in January 2025, following years of development delays. While the upper stage successfully entered orbit, the booster stage unfortunately exploded during its return to Earth. The subsequent launch in November successfully delivered two Mars-bound spacecraft into orbit and marked the first landing of a booster stage on a drone ship. In April, the same booster was used again during New Glenn's third mission, but the upper stage encountered a failure, resulting in the loss of the payload—a satellite for AST SpaceMobile. Blue Origin was preparing for a fourth launch that would have included satellites for Amazon, which were not on board at the time of the explosion. While there had been speculation about Blue Origin potentially skipping ahead to a more powerful version of New Glenn for its next flight, Limp dismissed those ideas. He did indicate, however, that the company plans to alter its method of transporting rockets to the launchpad and the process of erecting them for launch, although specific details on these changes remain undisclosed.
