Blok is using AI personas to simulate real-world app usage

Blok, a newly launched startup, is transforming the way developers test their applications by utilizing AI to create simulated user personas. This innovative approach allows app creators to evaluate features and enhance their products without the need for extensive beta testing or simulation software. Founded in 2024 by seasoned entrepreneurs Tom Charman and Olivia Higgs, Blok has already garnered $7.5 million in funding across two investment rounds. The seed round, amounting to $5 million, was led by MaC Venture Capital, with contributions from industry leaders at major tech companies such as Discord, Google, Meta, Apple, Snapchat, and Pinterest. The startup's pre-seed round also attracted notable investors, including Protagonist and Ryan Hoover’s Weekend Fund. Marlon Nichols, Managing GP at MaC Venture Capital, views Blok as a game changer, distinguishing it from tools like Optimizely and Amplitude that are more reactive. He emphasizes that Blok’s predictive testing capabilities enable teams to foresee user behavior before any code is written, addressing a critical need in product development. As applications become increasingly complex, the demand for thorough testing has surged. Higgs notes that after interviewing over 100 product engineers, they recognized the pressing need for improved testing methods, especially as user interactions evolve beyond traditional interfaces to include chat and voice technology. Charman explained that both startups and large corporations encounter distinct challenges. Smaller companies often lack the user cohorts necessary for real-time feedback, while larger firms aim to streamline their apps without cluttering them with unnecessary features. Blok aims to eliminate the need for experimental feature releases, significantly speeding up the testing process. When clients partner with Blok, they begin by uploading event log data from platforms like Amplitude, Mixpanel, or Segment. Blok then conducts behavioral modeling to develop user personas that represent a broad spectrum of the app's audience. Developers can submit their designs and testing hypotheses, allowing the AI-driven personas to simulate user interactions multiple times. The insights generated from these simulations include comprehensive reports detailing user interactions, areas of success, and suggestions for improvement. Additionally, a chatbot feature provides users with instant responses to queries about their experiments. Currently, Blok is focusing on solutions for finance and healthcare sectors, where the stakes are high, and subpar experiments cannot be publicly disclosed. Operating under a SaaS model, Blok is also strategizing on managing compute costs while targeting mid-single-digit millions in revenue for the year ahead, with plans to expand its customer base.
