Block reaches $45M settlement with 46 states over Cash App fraud probe

In a significant legal development, Block has reached a $45 million settlement with 46 U.S. states concerning allegations that its popular peer-to-peer payment service, Cash App, inadequately safeguarded users against fraud. State attorneys general have claimed that Block misrepresented the security features of Cash App, asserting that it offered bank-like protections, including advanced fraud detection methods. Despite these accusations, Block has denied any wrongdoing. The investigation revealed that Cash App's account setup process permitted users to open accounts without providing a Social Security number or date of birth. Additionally, there were no restrictions on the number of accounts an individual could create, which created vulnerabilities that scammers could exploit. Furthermore, the lack of an official customer support hotline led many users who faced account access issues to inadvertently contact fraudulent customer service numbers, exacerbating the problem. As more Americans turn to fintech applications for their banking needs, regulatory oversight has intensified. This settlement is the latest in a series of actions aimed at scrutinizing Cash App's operations. Previously, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau had also accused Block of neglecting to investigate fraud claims adequately, resulting in substantial penalties totaling $175 million. Under the terms of the new settlement, Block is committed to enhancing Cash App’s fraud prevention strategies and improving customer support services, including the introduction of live assistance for users. The initial report on this settlement was provided by Reuters, and Block has not yet responded to requests for comments from TechCrunch.
