Black Forest Labs, a prominent AI research facility based in Germany, announced on Monday that it has successfully secured $300 million in a Series B funding round, elevating its valuation to an impressive $3.25 billion. This funding round was co-led by Salesforce Ventures and Anjney Midha (AMP), with notable contributions from other significant players including a16z, NVIDIA, Northzone, Creandum, Earlybird VC, BroadLight Capital, General Catalyst, Temasek, Bain Capital Ventures, Air Street Capital, Visionaries Club, Canva, and Figma Ventures. The newly acquired funds are earmarked for enhancing research and development efforts. Since its inception in August 2024, Black Forest Labs has rapidly gained recognition for its innovative foundation AI models designed for image generation and editing. The startup garnered attention last year when it was disclosed that Elon Musk's Grok chatbot utilized its models for image creation. Furthermore, numerous companies, including Adobe, fal.ai, Picsart, ElevenLabs, VSCO, and Vercel, are also leveraging Black Forest Labs' technology. Recently, the company unveiled the latest iteration of its image generation model, known as Flux 2. This advanced model boasts improved text and image rendering capabilities and can reference up to ten images to ensure consistency in style and tone during image generation. Notably, it can produce images with resolutions reaching up to 4K pixels. The co-founders of Black Forest Labs—Robin Rombach, Patrick Esser, and Andreas Blattmann—are former researchers who played pivotal roles in the development of Stability AI’s Stable Diffusion models.
