BKR Capital, based in Canada, announced on Monday that its second fund has successfully raised $20 million CAD (approximately $14.5 million USD) to date, moving toward its ambitious goal of $50 million CAD. This fund is dedicated to supporting high-growth technology ventures led by Black founders, with a focus on innovative solutions for the future of work, living, and global connectivity, according to managing partner Lise Birikundavyi in an interview with TechCrunch. While the firm primarily targets Canadian startups, it remains open to investing in select companies from around the world. Birikundavyi noted that the average investment will range from $250,000 to $1.5 million. She highlighted that nearly 70% of the Black population in Canada consists of first or second-generation immigrants, which fosters a unique entrepreneurial perspective that often leads to early access to international markets, providing a significant advantage in scaling businesses. In contrast to some U.S. firms that hesitate to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, Birikundavyi emphasized that her Toronto-based fund does not share those concerns. She perceives the current landscape in Canada as a shift in focus rather than a regression in DEI discussions. "Investors are concentrating more on performance," she stated, while the opportunities for investment remain intact. Birikundavyi also pointed out that broadening access to underrepresented founders tends to yield high-quality investment opportunities, framing the initiative as less about DEI and more about strategic investing. She believes that Canadian investors recognize the value of inclusive investment, viewing it as beneficial for the ecosystem and ripe with profitable ventures. Founded in 2021, BKR Capital previously raised $22 million for its inaugural fund, which is reportedly outperforming at least 75% of other funds launched around the same period. The firm aims to finalize its Fund II by December, with plans to invest in 25 promising startups.
