In an unexpected twist of social media marketing, BiteSight, a food delivery app founded by Lucious McDaniel IV, has taken the internet by storm. The app allows users to view engaging videos of food before placing their orders, along with the ability to see what their friends are ordering and bookmark restaurants they wish to try. The breakthrough moment came when McDaniel's sister, Kendall, filmed an attention-grabbing TikTok that introduced BiteSight to viewers. Within just 15 minutes of posting, the video racked up 20,000 views. McDaniel described the initial excitement, quickly followed by chaos as the app experienced a surge in users, causing some features to falter. To keep up with the demand, the engineering team worked tirelessly, while McDaniel shared the unfolding drama through more TikTok videos, which also went viral. The appeal of BiteSight lies in its alignment with how young people interact with food content today—through short videos and peer recommendations. McDaniel noted that the inspiration for the video came from observing a friend's successful TikTok for his dating app, which garnered over a million views. This realization led McDaniel, 24, to create a platform that better reflects modern food discovery, moving away from traditional delivery apps that often showcase indistinguishable restaurants with generic stock photos. Having a background in restaurant technology and experience with startups, McDaniel, alongside co-founder Zac Schulwolf, spent over a year refining BiteSight, which was part of the Winter 2024 YCombinator cohort. After a limited beta at New York University, they launched the app and began their social media campaign, culminating in their viral video. Following this surge in visibility, BiteSight briefly climbed to the #2 spot in the App Store’s Food and Beverage category, surpassing well-known competitors like Uber Eats and McDonald’s. The app attracted over 100,000 new users and sparked interest from restaurants and investors alike, all while receiving requests for a nationwide expansion. Despite facing stiff competition from major players like DoorDash and Uber Eats, McDaniel is optimistic about BiteSight's future. Leveraging AI technology allows the startup to operate efficiently, with fewer engineers required than its larger rivals. This innovative approach not only helps in managing costs but also enables them to provide better service to small business owners and consumers. BiteSight aims to be the premier app for the generation that thrives on social recommendations and video content, setting itself apart by focusing exclusively on food delivery in a unique and engaging way.
