Bitcoin miners ditch crypto roots as AI drives 70% of revenue

A significant transformation is underway in the cryptocurrency sector as Bitcoin mining companies pivot towards artificial intelligence (AI) for revenue generation. A recent Bloomberg report highlights that publicly traded crypto miners are on course to derive the majority of their income from AI by year-end, marking a notable departure from their traditional reliance on Bitcoin mining. The shift is largely driven by diminishing profitability in Bitcoin mining, characterized by declining token prices and rising operational costs. Data from CoinShares indicates that AI could account for approximately 70% of the collective revenue of publicly listed miners by December, a sharp increase from about 30% at present. The margins reveal a stark contrast: Bitcoin mining gross margins have plummeted to around 60%, down from over 90% during the market's peak in 2021, while margins for AI cloud operations hover around the mid-80% range, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Vasu Kasibhotla, a senior industry analyst, stated that the sharp decline in Bitcoin prices, combined with escalating energy costs, is prompting miners to expedite their transition to AI. Currently, electricity expenses consume nearly 40% of mining revenue, pushing total costs into the low-to-mid 90% range, whereas energy costs for AI operators utilizing high-powered chips remain in the low single digits. Additionally, the industry is confronting structural pressures, with the “hash price” – a critical indicator of mining profitability – reaching historical lows recently, as reported by Luxor Technology. Many miners are reportedly shutting down equipment due to these profitability challenges. The Bitcoin protocol itself compounds this issue by halving mining rewards approximately every four years, with the next halving event slated for 2024. In response to shrinking returns, several notable mining firms are restructuring their operations. Companies like Cipher Digital and Hut 8 are transitioning to AI data centers, while others are liquidating crypto assets to finance this shift. Notably, MARA Holdings has recently sold approximately $1 billion of Bitcoin to prioritize AI infrastructure. This strategic pivot is already yielding positive results in the market. Shares of early adopters of AI infrastructure, including TeraWulf, IREN Ltd., Cipher, and Hut 8, have surged, with these companies securing long-term contracts with major tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and Anthropic. Experts predict that the long-term viability of high-performance computing (HPC) and AI data centers will outpace that of Bitcoin mining, offering more predictable margins and robust cash flows. Brian Dobson, managing director at Clear Street, emphasized the operational advantages of data center businesses. Despite these shifts, analysts believe that the Bitcoin network will maintain its stability, thanks to its self-regulating mechanisms that adjust rewards to keep sufficient miners engaged. However, for many firms that once thrived during the crypto boom, this transition signifies a profound change in their operational paradigms. Matthew Kimmell, an investment strategist at CoinShares, remarked that this evolution may herald the end of an era for some large U.S. miners, as they adapt to new market conditions characterized by tighter margins and increased competition.
