Paul Tudor Jones says U.S. is late to regulating AI: 'We should have already done it'

Prominent hedge fund manager Paul Tudor Jones has raised alarms regarding the United States' delay in regulating artificial intelligence. In an interview with CNBC's 'Squawk Box,' he emphasized the urgency of implementing regulations, stating, "We need to do it tomorrow. We're late already. We should have already done it." Jones highlighted the necessity for governments to introduce measures like watermarking AI-generated content to help differentiate between authentic material and deepfakes. His remarks come amid increasing apprehension among professionals about the potential risks associated with AI as the technology continues to advance. During a recent gathering of AI experts, Jones noted a significant shift in sentiment, revealing that 80% of attendees now advocate for AI regulation, a considerable rise from only 20% last year. One industry leader expressed surprise that regulation had not yet been established, reflecting a growing consensus on the need for oversight. Long-standing concerns regarding safety, privacy, and security in the AI landscape have prompted calls for regulation across various sectors. The European Union has already taken steps by passing the AI Act in 2024. Meanwhile, several U.S. states have begun introducing their own legislation, often focused on child safety. In March, the Biden administration unveiled a comprehensive AI policy framework, as the U.S. finds itself in a competitive race with China for AI dominance. Recent reports indicate that both nations are contemplating discussions about AI during an upcoming meeting between former President Trump and China's Xi Jinping. "Everyone wants what's best for their people," Jones remarked, asserting the importance of fostering a dialogue with China on AI safety.
