Amid Epstein fallout, Bill Gates becomes point of controversy at India AI summit

His sudden withdrawal, announced shortly before the event, has sparked significant discussion, particularly in light of recent revelations concerning his past connection with the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, who was implicated in numerous scandals. The Gates Foundation India stated that Gates decided to pull out to maintain focus on the summit's core objectives. He was replaced by another representative from the foundation. Government sources also indicated that he would not be attending, but the Gates Foundation had previously asserted that he would still speak. The situation has drawn attention from India's IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who remarked that Gates’ decision to attend or not was a matter of personal choice and refrained from further comment. Among these documents were references to Epstein's claims about facilitating extramarital affairs for Gates, which Gates has vehemently denied, calling the allegations "absolutely absurd and completely false." He maintains that his interactions with Epstein were strictly limited to discussions about philanthropy, asserting that he never visited Epstein's private island nor met any women connected to the financier. The New Delhi AI Impact Summit, where Gates was slated to speak, has attracted prominent figures from the tech industry, including Sundar Pichai of Alphabet, Sam Altman of OpenAI, and Dario Amodei from Anthropic. It has also seen participation from global leaders like French President Emmanuel Macron and UN Secretary-General António Guterres. The Gates Foundation continues to play a significant role in India's health and development sectors, including initiatives related to artificial intelligence.
