In a significant philanthropic move, Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, has made an astounding $8 billion donation to the Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation, an organization led by his ex-wife, Melinda French Gates. This remarkable contribution comes nearly three years after their divorce and was officially recorded in a tax filing from late 2024. The donation marks one of the largest publicly reported charitable transfers in recent years. According to a spokesperson for the foundation, this transfer is part of a larger financial agreement totaling $12.5 billion that Bill and Melinda Gates had established, which has now been completely fulfilled. Prior to this donation, Bill Gates was estimated to have a net worth of $118 billion, while Melinda French Gates was valued at approximately $17.7 billion, as per the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. In 2024, the Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation allocated $875 million to various initiatives, including mental health support for youth, efforts to mitigate political violence, and programs aimed at empowering women in the workforce. The tax records revealed the foundation's leadership structure, listing Melinda French Gates as the director, her senior adviser John Sage as president and treasurer, and Brooke Anderson as vice president and secretary. Melinda formally exited the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in May 2024, concluding decades of collaborative efforts in global health, education, and poverty alleviation. Following her divorce, she launched the Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation in late 2022, focusing on critical issues such as women's rights, paid family leave, economic mobility, and social equality. The couple's separation followed reports about Bill Gates' past relationship with a Microsoft employee, which was brought to light in 2019 when the employee sent a letter to Microsoft's board outlining the affair that reportedly began in 2000. The board deemed the relationship 'inappropriate' after investigating the claims. During this inquiry, Bill Gates resigned from the company’s board in March 2020 to concentrate on his philanthropic endeavors.
