Bill Gates to not speak at Microsoft Summit? What we know so far

In a notable turn of events, Bill Gates has reportedly been advised not to attend Microsoft's annual CEO Summit, amidst renewed scrutiny over his connections to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. This development, as reported by The Wall Street Journal, signifies a shift for Gates, who has been a long-time fixture at the summit and traditionally hosts a dinner for attendees at his Washington residence. This setback is part of a broader pattern for Gates this year. He was also sidelined from Berkshire Hathaway’s annual shareholder meeting in Omaha and failed to deliver a planned keynote at the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi in February, following the emergence of new documents related to his ties with Epstein. Once celebrated as one of the world’s most admired individuals, Gates has spent years cultivating a philanthropic image, distancing himself from his former role as a contentious co-founder of Microsoft. Despite no longer being a majority shareholder, Gates’ identity remains closely linked to Microsoft, the company he established with Paul Allen. Weeks prior to the CEO Summit scheduled for May, Gates was informed by Microsoft that it would be best for him to refrain from attending this year's event. A Microsoft spokesperson reassured, "While it didn’t work out this year, we’ve already extended an invitation for Bill to attend the CEO Summit next year." Gates’ absence from the Berkshire Hathaway meeting marked the first time in decades he missed this significant event. Though he was not officially barred from attending, reports suggest that he received advice against it. The relationship between Gates and Berkshire Hathaway's chairman, Warren Buffett, has also reportedly cooled. Buffett, who had been a major supporter of the Gates Foundation, announced in 2024 that he would not be donating any money to the foundation after his death. In a recent interview, Buffett revealed that he had not spoken to Gates since the latest revelations regarding Epstein surfaced and expressed a desire to observe any further developments before making decisions about his annual contributions. Earlier this year, Gates was also expected to deliver a keynote address at the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi. However, just days before the event, his name was removed from the attendee list, and Indian officials confirmed that his invitation was under review due to the resurfacing of Epstein-related documents. Gates was reportedly staying at the Oberoi hotel in Delhi while he awaited news on whether he should meet with PM Narendra Modi, French President Emmanuel Macron, and other dignitaries. Ultimately, it was decided that his presence could detract from the summit's focus on AI, leading to his withdrawal from the keynote address. This series of incidents suggests that Gates' participation in key corporate and public engagements is now more closely scrutinized, reflecting the ongoing impact of his association with Epstein on his public image.
