These deceptive emails often originate from suspicious sources, such as info@smt.plusoasis.com, and feature enticing subject lines like 'Get Your PAN 2.0 Card.' The scam attempts to entice recipients into clicking a link that claims to direct them to a new version of their e-PAN card, complete with a QR code. However, this link leads to a counterfeit website designed to mimic an official government portal. Once on this fraudulent site, users are prompted to enter confidential details, including their PAN number, Aadhaar number, bank account details, and other personal information. Such stolen data can be exploited for identity theft or financial fraud. The PIB Fact Check unit has taken to social media to warn the public, stating: "Scam alert!! Have you received an email asking you to click on a link to download your e-PAN Card? … This email is #Fake." The Income Tax Department has reiterated that it does not send unsolicited emails or SMS messages requesting personal or financial information. Legitimate PAN services are exclusively available through official government channels, not via random emails or third-party websites. To safeguard against these scams, the government advises citizens to remain vigilant and adhere to some essential safety measures. First, always check the sender’s email address; authentic government communications will come from domains ending in .gov.in or .nic.in. Moreover, users are strongly discouraged from clicking on dubious links or downloading attachments that claim to be from government agencies without proper verification. Access to official e-PAN services should only be through the Income Tax Department’s website or the NSDL/UTIITSL portals. In case you receive any phishing emails, the government encourages immediate reporting. Suspicious emails and complaints should be sent to webmanager@incometax.gov.in and incident@cert-in.org.in. These agencies are closely monitoring the situation and will take necessary measures to mitigate the threat. This warning comes at a crucial time when an increasing number of citizens are depending on digital services for tax filings and financial transactions, providing cybercriminals with opportunities to exploit this reliance through sophisticated scams that imitate official communications. The government is urging the public to help raise awareness about the scam.
