
A new type of online fraud is making waves, and it’s being called the WhatsApp Screen Mirroring Scam. This alarming scheme can endanger bank accounts and potentially lead to identity theft, all initiated through what appears to be a benign video call on WhatsApp. Recently, fintech company OneCard issued a warning to its users about this growing threat. The scam operates by having fraudsters initiate a video call while masquerading as bank representatives or customer service agents offering enticing rewards. During the call, they manipulate users into sharing their phone screens, claiming it is necessary for verifying account information or fixing technical problems. Once the screen sharing is underway, scammers gain immediate access to sensitive information, such as passwords, bank account details, and one-time passwords (OTPs). In some instances, these fraudsters may also instruct users to click on links or enter codes that could install malware on their devices. This malicious software enables the scammer to remotely access the victim's device, allowing them to siphon off crucial financial data like CVVs, PINs, and OTPs, which can lead to unauthorized transactions. To safeguard against such scams, experts advise against engaging in video calls with unknown contacts and to never share your screen with strangers. It’s also crucial to avoid using financial applications on devices that might be compromised. Implementing two-factor authentication for all financial and messaging applications is an essential step in enhancing security. Furthermore, users should be cautious about clicking on suspicious links or downloading unfamiliar applications to protect their personal information.
