Amazon-backed eVTOL company Beta Technologies debuts at $34 on NYSE

Beta Technologies, an innovator in electric aviation, made its debut on the New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday, launching shares at $34 each. This pricing exceeded the anticipated range of $27 to $33, allowing the company to accumulate over $1 billion by selling 29.9 million shares. However, the stock experienced a dip of approximately 5% shortly after the market opened. This initial public offering (IPO) is a significant benchmark for the emerging electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) sector, which has been actively seeking approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The market is currently dominated by competitors like Joby Aviation and Archer Aviation, with advocates claiming that eVTOL technology could alleviate air traffic congestion. In its IPO prospectus, Beta highlighted Archer as a client for its ground support equipment, primarily consisting of charging stations installed in 51 locations across the United States. Despite the promising technology, the company reported a widening net loss of $183.2 million in the first half of the year, compared to $137.1 million during the same period last year. On a positive note, revenue saw a significant rise, more than doubling from $7.6 million to $15.6 million. Founded in 2017, Beta's CEO and founder, Kyle Clark, also serves as a test pilot for the company. He revealed in an interview with CNBC that their aircraft are currently engaged in various military missions. Clark anticipates that the company will secure full FAA certification for commercial operations within the next 30 months, provided they can demonstrate successful production, operations, and a healthy backlog of orders. Notably, Beta launched its IPO amidst a prolonged government shutdown that began in early October, during which the Securities and Exchange Commission operates with reduced staff. Nevertheless, Clark expressed the company's determination to move forward, stating they wanted to ensure progress despite the shutdown. Key investors in Beta include Amazon and General Electric, holding stakes of 10.2% and 6.3%, respectively, prior to the IPO. In September, GE Aerospace announced a substantial $300 million investment in Beta, while Amazon first invested in 2021 through its Climate Pledge Fund, aiming for a net-zero carbon footprint by 2040.
