Bengaluru overtakes Mumbai as India's biggest hub for under-30 entrepreneurs

Bengaluru has officially surpassed Mumbai to claim the title of India's leading hub for entrepreneurs aged 30 and under. This shift marks a significant change in the country's startup dynamic, as a new generation of founders increasingly gravitates towards sectors such as artificial intelligence, space technology, and electric mobility. According to the Avendus Wealth–Hurun India U30 List 2026, Bengaluru boasts 21 entrepreneurs featured in this year's rankings, a remarkable rise from just seven in 2025. Meanwhile, Mumbai, which held the top position last year, has fallen to second place with 16 entrepreneurs. Gurugram takes the third spot with 12, followed by New Delhi with 10, while Hyderabad and Kolkata each have five entrepreneurs. This report underscores Bengaluru's ascent as a reflection of the evolving profile of India's startup ecosystem, where technology-driven ventures are drawing both entrepreneurs and investors. The city is home to numerous founders of high-growth companies spanning AI, electric vehicles, space technology, and enterprise software. At the state level, Karnataka leads the rankings with 22 entrepreneurs, ahead of Maharashtra's 18 and Haryana's 13. These findings reinforce Karnataka's status as India's premier innovation hub, bolstered by a robust startup ecosystem, an active venture capital presence, and a wealth of engineering talent. The U30 List recognizes 102 entrepreneurs aged 30 or younger who have either founded companies valued at $25 million or more or are next-generation leaders of family-owned businesses with valuations exceeding $50 million. This year's list has grown by 28% from 80 entrepreneurs in 2025, with the total valuation of the companies represented reaching a staggering ₹2.9 lakh crore. The average age of these entrepreneurs is 28. Additionally, the report highlights a geographical expansion in entrepreneurship, with non-metro cities contributing to 40 entrepreneurs on this year's list, signaling that the startup movement is spreading beyond India's largest metropolitan areas. Sector trends reveal that DeepTech is emerging as a prominent theme among young entrepreneurs. One in four individuals on the list comes from DeepTech and HardTech sectors, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, electric vehicles, aerospace, and cybersecurity. Notably, AI and Machine Learning alone account for eight entrepreneurs across six companies, while the SpaceTech sector is represented by six founders involved in ventures like Pixxel, Digantara, and Apolink. The report further indicates that 84% of the listed entrepreneurs are first-generation founders, highlighting the enduring spirit of self-made entrepreneurship in India. The number of seed-stage companies has also increased to 13 from five last year, indicating a stronger early-stage innovation pipeline. Funding remains concentrated among a select group of successful startups, with the top 10 U30-led companies raising over $3.5 billion in total. Leading the pack are Zepto with $2.3 billion and BharatPe with $650 million. Altogether, the entrepreneurs featured in the list employ more than 75,000 individuals, showcasing the growing economic impact of India's youngest business leaders as the startup ecosystem transitions from consumer internet ventures to engineering- and technology-focused enterprises.
