OpenAI’s leadership drama heads to the big screen with 'Artificial', starring Sam Altman’s power struggle

Renowned filmmaker Luca Guadagnino is reportedly in negotiations to helm 'Artificial', a feature film that delves into a dramatic episode in OpenAI's history. This period, marked by the controversial ousting and subsequent reinstatement of CEO Sam Altman in late 2023, is set to be portrayed in a gripping narrative. The project is said to be progressing rapidly at Amazon MGM Studios, with producers David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford collaborating under Heyday Films. The screenplay, crafted by Simon Rich, also sees him serving as a producer. Jennifer Fox is in talks to contribute to the production team. As per reports from The Hollywood Reporter, the film is on a fast track for production, aiming for a potential shoot this summer, with locations in San Francisco and Italy being considered. While casting is not yet finalized, there are early discussions about Andrew Garfield possibly portraying Altman, with Monica Barbaro in consideration for the role of CTO Mira Murati, and Yura Borisov potentially cast as Ilya Sutskever, the co-founder pivotal in Altman's initial removal. This film is expected to depict the shocking internal conflict that rocked Silicon Valley: Altman's abrupt departure from OpenAI amid concerns over AI safety and alleged misconduct, followed by a rapid internal uprising leading to his reinstatement. If confirmed, 'Artificial' would represent Guadagnino's third collaboration with Amazon MGM, following 'After the Hunt', featuring Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield, set for release in October, and 'Challengers', starring Zendaya, which was released last year. Guadagnino had previously been slated to direct 'Sgt. Rock', a World War II film for DC, but that project was halted, allowing 'Artificial' to move forward more swiftly.
