The person who named Google's Nano Banana has an idea why the world found the AI image generator so appealing

The individual responsible for naming Google's AI image generation model, affectionately dubbed 'Nano Banana,' has shared intriguing insights into its widespread appeal. According to Product Manager Naina Raisinghani, a key factor in the model’s success was its immediate availability to users across the globe. "From day one, it didn’t matter where you were or if you were a developer or a casual user; everyone had access at the same time," she explained in a recent interview with Google's official blog, Keyword. Raisinghani elaborated that culturally relevant prompts played a significant role in the model's popularity, citing viral trends such as the figurine phenomenon that originated in Thailand and the saree trend that gained traction in India. Interestingly, the name 'Nano Banana' emerged during a late-night brainstorming session. "At 2:30 a.m., one of the PMs reached out to me, saying we needed a name. I suggested something humorous like 'Nano Banana,' and they just went with it," she recalled. This playful naming choice is reminiscent of Google's past tradition of naming Android versions after desserts, a practice they abandoned in 2019 in favor of numerical designations. However, the name 'Nano Banana' is not a reflection of any health trend; it combines Raisinghani's personal nicknames—'Naina Banana' and 'Nano.' "Some friends call me Naina Banana, while others refer to me as Nano because I’m short and tech-savvy. It just made sense to merge them, especially since it’s a Flash model," she said. In the competitive landscape of AI model testing, codenames have become a common practice among developers. Platforms like LMArena allow users to compare AI models anonymously before revealing their identities post-voting. Google has no intentions of changing the quirky name, as Raisinghani notes, "People have responded positively; they find the name amusing, and that has sparked more conversations around it." The team behind Nano Banana has fully embraced the playful nature of the name, even adopting the banana emoji as a symbol of their work. "We’re divided on the banana puns, but it's clear that people enjoy the model, and that’s what matters most," she concluded.
