Beeper, the innovative messaging platform that consolidates various chat services into a single interface, is set to relaunch its application with a fresh focus on user security. Scheduled for release on Wednesday, the updated app eliminates the need for its cloud services, offering a more secure alternative. In addition to improved security, Beeper is rolling out premium subscription options that provide users with access to additional accounts beyond the free tier. These new features include the ability to set reminders, schedule messages for later delivery, and an incognito mode that allows users to read messages without marking them as seen. AI-driven voice note transcriptions and more are also part of this premium offering. Now under the ownership of Automattic, the parent company of WordPress.com, Beeper was acquired for $125 million in 2024. The app has effectively integrated with Texts.com, a competitor that Automattic purchased for $50 million the previous year. Together, they have formed a 30-person team, operating under the Beeper name and providing support for popular messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, Instagram, and Telegram, among others. Beeper aims to streamline the challenges posed by an overwhelming number of messaging apps while ensuring user privacy remains a top priority. According to Beeper CEO Kishan Bagaria, the new model allows users to connect directly to messaging networks without relying on Beeper Cloud, thus enhancing end-to-end encryption. The relationship between Beeper and the messaging services it integrates with is under scrutiny. While some companies are supportive of Beeper's approach, others have yet to respond. Bagaria noted the intention to respect the business models of first-party apps, ensuring that if ads appear on platforms like Telegram, they will also be visible on Beeper. The newly launched premium plan, Beeper Plus, priced at $9.99 per month, allows users to connect with ten messaging services instead of the five available to free users. Subscribers can take advantage of features like message scheduling, reminders, and custom app icons. An even higher tier, Beeper Plus Plus, is available for $49.99 per month, designed to cater to businesses and social media managers. As Automattic continues to integrate Beeper with Texts.com, the two platforms are reportedly 99% aligned, with only minor features pending transfer. Future plans include incorporating Automattic's latest acquisition, the personal CRM Clay, into Beeper’s ecosystem. With millions of registered users, Beeper is also facilitating migration for those from Texts.com who prefer its new on-device technology. While some reliability issues remain with this model, efforts are underway to address them. The eventual goal is to phase out Beeper Cloud entirely once the on-device option is fully operational. Looking ahead, Beeper envisions making user data accessible to third-party services with permission, allowing advanced functionalities such as summarizing important messages through AI. However, Bagaria emphasizes a commitment to user privacy and transparency, ensuring that users have control over their data and how it is utilized. As Beeper embarks on this new chapter, it reaffirms its dedication to enhancing user experience while prioritizing security in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
