The emergence of Gemini's 2.5 Flash Image model, dubbed Nano Banana, has propelled it to the forefront of the 3D modeling scene, especially amidst the growing trend of digital assets. Competing against established players like ChatGPT and Qwen, Gemini now faces a formidable rival: ByteDance's Seedream 4.0. This latest model has swiftly claimed the top position on the Artificial Analysis leaderboard, a platform that evaluates various large language models (LLMs) based on quality, speed, and cost efficiency. Currently, Seedream 4.0 leads the pack, pushing Nano Banana to second place, with OpenAI’s GPT-4 occupying fourth and Alibaba’s Qwen Image Edit trailing in fifth. Not only does Seedream 4.0 generate images from natural language prompts, but it also excels in editing existing images—an area where Nano Banana has also made a mark. Seedream’s impressive capabilities include the extraction of intricate details from reference images, allowing for advanced tasks such as character design, artistic style replication, and product development. This model can even process multiple image inputs, granting users the ability to blend different visuals seamlessly. To assess their performance, we conducted a side-by-side comparison using LMArena’s feature, testing both Gemini Nano Banana and Seedream 4.0 with five distinct prompts. One notable test involved creating a highly detailed 1/7 scale figurine of characters in a realistic setting. While Seedream preserved the original facial expressions remarkably well, it fell short in producing an actual figurine, an area where Gemini excelled. In another prompt centered around modern streetwear, Seedream tried to capture the essence of the original image but struggled with accuracy in details. Conversely, Gemini managed to maintain a fair representation of the original subject. This pattern continued as we explored additional prompts, with Gemini often outperforming Seedream in terms of realism, although both models occasionally struggled with precise facial likenesses. In summary, while Gemini Nano Banana retains its status as a leading contender in the image generation arena, it is not without its flaws, occasionally missing finer details or compromising resolution. The competition between these two innovative models highlights the rapid advancements in 3D image generation technology and the fierce race for supremacy in the field.
