Base Power raises $1B to deploy home batteries everywhere

Base Power, a dynamic startup from Austin, has rapidly emerged as a leader in battery storage solutions, having established one of Texas's largest systems in just two years. Following a successful $200 million funding round in April, the company has now raised an impressive $1 billion in its Series C financing, spearheaded by Addition with support from notable investors including CapitalG, Elad Gil, Lightspeed, Ribbit, Thrive Capital, and Valor Equity Partners. This latest investment values Base Power at a remarkable $3 billion before funding, as reported by the New York Times. Having sold over 100 megawatt-hours of its home storage batteries in Texas, Base Power is making waves despite being established only in 2023. The company offers a leasing model for homeowners, with upfront costs ranging from $695 to $995 for installation of either 25 kilowatt-hour or 50 kilowatt-hour batteries, which significantly outperform competitors. For context, the 25-kilowatt battery provides twice the storage capacity of a single Tesla Powerwall, enabling households to maintain power for up to 48 hours during outages. Customers are also required to pay a monthly fee, choosing between $19 or $29, and commit to purchasing electricity from Base Power for three years at a competitive rate of 8.5 cents per kilowatt-hour, plus applicable delivery fees. This innovative leasing approach effectively mitigates the high initial costs traditionally associated with home battery systems, which can run into the thousands of dollars without installation. Additionally, Base Power is strategically leveraging Texas's deregulated energy market, which facilitates easy switching between electricity suppliers. The state's utility regulator incentivizes power providers that can rapidly deliver substantial electricity to the grid, a capability that grid-scale batteries excel at. In return for the low upfront costs, Base Power customers consent to the use of their batteries for selling electricity back to the grid during periods when they don't require backup power. Looking to the future, Base Power aims to expand its reach beyond Texas and is in the process of constructing its first battery factory near Austin, with plans for a second facility in the United States on the horizon.
