F1 in Azerbaijan: This sport is my red flag

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix, now in its tenth year, stands out as a striking example of modern Formula 1 street circuits. Nestled along the picturesque Caspian Sea, the track's anti-clockwise design is renowned for merging some of the fastest speeds in F1 with challenging twists through the historic cityscape, where walls and barriers loom ominously to penalize any miscalculations. Characterized by low downforce, the circuit features primarily slow corners reminiscent of tracks like Montreal and Monza. Despite the controversial backdrop of the host nation—a common theme for many F1 venues, including recent races in the U.S.—Baku retains a special charm for fans. The city's eclectic architecture and stunning views often lead to exhilarating races, enhanced by breathtaking aerial coverage from drones and helicopters, which reveal the stunning interplay of modernity and history. During Friday's practice sessions, fans of Ferrari—known as Tifosi—had reasons to cheer, as Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc clocked impressive times in FP2. Hamilton, who has struggled this season following his transition to Ferrari, appeared particularly upbeat during interviews, showcasing a side of him not often seen this year. Leclerc, with four previous pole positions at Baku, further ignited hopes for a strong performance. However, the qualifying rounds on Saturday turned out to be a disappointment for the Ferrari team. Despite a promising start for Hamilton in Q1, he faltered in Q2 and ultimately qualified in 12th place, marking yet another missed podium opportunity for the seven-time world champion, aside from his Sprint win in China. The session was marred by a record six red flags, extending the qualifying period to over two hours due to unpredictable wind gusts that altered grip levels and disrupted braking points. Williams’ Alex Albon faced an early exit, damaging his front left wheel just two laps in, which put an abrupt end to his day on the track.
