Baidu, the prominent Chinese technology firm, is set to introduce robotaxis in London next year, collaborating with ride-hailing giants Uber and Lyft. This initiative marks a significant step as the UK becomes a key player in the autonomous vehicle landscape. Through their partnership, Baidu's Apollo Go autonomous vehicles will be integrated into the platforms of both Lyft and Uber. Lyft is gearing up to begin testing its initial fleet of robotaxis in 2026, contingent on regulatory approvals. Lyft CEO David Risher announced that the company plans to expand its fleet to hundreds of vehicles following this initial phase. Uber is also poised to kick off its pilot program in the first half of 2026. Both companies expressed enthusiasm about contributing to the evolution of mobility in the UK, offering Londoners a new, safe transportation alternative. This initiative is part of Baidu's broader strategy to enhance its global presence, with operations currently spanning 22 cities and facilitating over 250,000 trips weekly. The UK's interest in driverless taxis has surged, especially after the government revealed plans in June to support the integration of autonomous vehicle technology on public roads. The aim is to initiate small-scale robotaxi trials by spring 2026, positioning Baidu among the frontrunners. London's commitment to its "Vision Zero" initiative—targeting the elimination of serious injuries and fatalities in transportation by 2041—also aligns with the deployment of autonomous driving technologies. As Baidu forges ahead, its competitor Waymo is preparing to launch its testing in London, with plans for a full service rollout by 2026. Waymo already operates in 26 markets worldwide, including major cities such as Tokyo and New York City. Meanwhile, Baidu is actively expanding its testing capabilities in international markets, including the United Arab Emirates and Switzerland.
