Like Google, China's Baidu is beefing up its search with AI to fight rivals

In a significant update, Baidu, the leading tech company in China, has revamped its primary search engine by integrating advanced artificial intelligence. This marks the most substantial transformation of the platform in a decade and is seen as a strategic response to emerging competitors like DeepSeek, rather than traditional search engines. Analysts believe that the focus on AI and the development of Baidu's AI chatbot, Ernie Bot, is crucial for the company to maintain its competitive edge. Dan Ives, the global head of tech research at Wedbush Securities, emphasized the urgency of this transition, stating, "Baidu is not waiting around to watch the paint dry; they are moving full steam ahead on AI." As the largest search engine in China, Baidu faces increasing pressure from AI-driven services such as ChatGPT and DeepSeek, which have gained significant traction this year with their innovative models. According to Kai Wang, an equity market strategist at Morningstar, the rise of short video platforms like Douyin and Kuaishou, which are also venturing into AI search, adds to the challenges for Baidu. In response to these threats, Baidu has made substantial adjustments to its search functionality, aligning it more closely with user behavior seen in AI platforms like ChatGPT and DeepSeek. This strategic pivot mirrors initiatives by Google outside of China, which is also enhancing its search capabilities to counteract the disruption caused by new technologies. Baidu was an early adopter of AI technologies, launching its first models and the Ernie Bot to the public in 2023. Since then, the company has been proactive in rolling out updated AI models. However, they now face fierce competition from other tech giants such as Alibaba and Tencent, as well as newer entrants like DeepSeek. This competitive landscape has impacted Baidu's stock performance, which has risen about 2.5% this year, in stark contrast to Alibaba's 30.5% increase and Tencent's 20% rise. As Ives pointed out, Baidu's recent moves are both defensive and offensive, underscoring the need for the company to assert itself in the AI space and avoid being perceived as a lesser player compared to Tencent.
