Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the appointment of Chet Kapoor, the previous CEO of DataStax, as its new Vice President of Security Services and Observability. This strategic move was revealed in an internal communication from AWS CEO Matt Garman, who emphasized the importance of this role in enhancing AWS’s security framework. Reporting directly to Garman, Kapoor will collaborate closely with AWS Chief Information Security Officer Amy Herzog. His primary focus will be on bolstering the security features of AWS's expanding artificial intelligence (AI) portfolio, a crucial initiative as the company intensifies its efforts in the AI domain. Kapoor brings substantial experience to his new role, having previously overseen Astra DB at DataStax, where he integrated real-time AI capabilities with the open-source Apache Cassandra database. Garman highlighted this experience as vital for advancing AWS's security strategies. This leadership change is part of a broader shift within AWS’s AI sector, which has seen some executives depart over the past year, including VP of AI Matt Wood and VP of Generative AI Vasi Philomin. However, the company has also strengthened its ranks with new talent, such as former Microsoft executive Julie White, who has taken on the role of marketing chief.
