Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced that it has successfully addressed the significant technical issue that led to widespread outages affecting a multitude of well-known websites, including Perplexity, Reddit, Snapchat, and Hinge. According to AWS, the core DNS problem has been fully resolved, and the majority of its services are now functioning normally again. However, the company noted that some requests might still experience throttling as it continues to work towards complete resolution. While services like Perplexity, Robinhood, and the UK's HMRC have confirmed that they are back online, others, such as Reddit and Snapchat, are slowly returning to full operational capacity. Srinivas, a representative, took to X to share that Perplexity is once again operational, stating, "Perplexity and Comet are back up, running, and stable for the last two hours. Thanks for waiting!" As the leading cloud service provider globally, AWS plays a crucial role in the digital infrastructure for businesses of all sizes, from startups to large corporations and government entities. With a significant share of the cloud market, AWS is integral to the functioning of numerous digital services. Therefore, when a part of their service encounters issues, it can trigger a chain reaction across the internet. For example, even if a specific application doesn’t run on AWS directly, it may rely on another service that does, leading to potential disruptions. The recent outage impacted a wide range of popular platforms, including: - Amazon and its services like Alexa, Music, and Prime Video - Gaming platforms such as Fortnite, Clash of Clans, and Roblox - Financial services like Coinbase, Lloyds Bank, and Halifax - Productivity tools including Microsoft 365, Slack, and Asana This incident highlights the extensive reliance on AWS for essential digital operations, affecting countless users and businesses worldwide.
