Amazon Web Services expands GenAI offerings with OpenAI’s ‘open weight’ models

On August 5, Amazon Web Services (AWS) unveiled a significant enhancement to its generative AI capabilities by integrating OpenAI's new open weight foundation models—gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b—into its cloud services, specifically Amazon Bedrock and Amazon SageMaker AI. This marks a pivotal moment as these models are made available through AWS for the first time, simplifying the process for customers to develop and deploy generative AI applications using familiar AWS tools and resources. The gpt-oss-120b model boasts remarkable performance metrics, offering three times better price-performance than Google’s Gemini, five times better than DeepSeek-R1, and twice that of OpenAI’s own o4 model, as reported by Amazon. These models are designed for advanced reasoning tasks, making them ideal for complex workflows such as coding, scientific research, and multi-step problem-solving. They come equipped with features like chain-of-thought outputs, web search capabilities, and code interpretation, along with a substantial 128K token context window that allows for the processing of extensive documents. In terms of safety, OpenAI’s models are integrated with Amazon Bedrock’s Guardrails, which effectively filter out up to 88% of harmful content through configurable options. Furthermore, these models have undergone thorough safety evaluations to ensure responsible deployment practices. Customers using Amazon SageMaker AI can leverage OpenAI’s models for various functions, including pre-training, evaluation, fine-tuning, and custom deployment, utilizing AWS’s comprehensive machine learning toolkit. Notable organizations such as Pfizer, Siemens, the PGA TOUR, and GoDaddy are already harnessing the power of Amazon Bedrock for their generative AI-driven transformations. OpenAI now joins the ranks of other model providers like Meta and Mistral AI within AWS’s expanding ecosystem of open weight models. "The introduction of OpenAI as our latest open weight model provider signifies a key milestone in our commitment to delivering cutting-edge AI solutions to organizations globally," stated Atul Deo, AWS's director of product. Dmitry Pimenov, product lead at OpenAI, added, "Our open weight models empower developers, from independent creators to large corporate teams, to explore new opportunities across various industries and applications. In partnership with AWS, we're offering robust and flexible tools that facilitate innovation and scalability for our customers."
